Northumberland - the great Northern wilderness of England. Straddled by Hadrian's Wall and visited by too few people. It is a land of wild hills and windy wide beaches. A long fought-over border (Berwick-upon-Tweed has changed hands between the English and Scots innumerable times!). By contrast, in the south is the industrial town of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and its surrounding areas.
.
Most of all though, this is a land of Castles. A roll call of the Castles from this county sounds like a roll call of the best in the World - Bamburgh, Lindisfarne, Dunstanburgh, Alnwick, Warkworth, Newcastle, Tynemouth ... the list goes on!
Only Kent has a similar range of Castles.
