PRESTON TOWER

Northumbria

Preston Tower, Northumbria

What stands today, converted into a clock tower, is the main survivor from a very ambitious pele tower built around 1415 by the Sheriff of Northumberland, Robert Harbottle.  As pele towers go, Preston was rather large, not only consisting of this tower, but also of a curtain wall (only one small part of which has survived), making it halfway to a fully-fledged Castle.

The tower was turned into a clock tower around 1864 when the new house was built nearby.

The Tower is open to the public and makes an interesting diversion from the grander Castles which dominate the countryside around here.
