TWIZELL CASTLE
Northumbria
A Castle stood on this site in the late 14th/early 15th Century, and it commands a view above the confluence of the Till and Tweed rivers; hence it's rather odd name and combination of the names of the two rivers.
This Castle was completely ruined by the Scots in 1496. The site was acquired by the Blake family who had a new mansion built here between 1760 and 1780. A second phase of building took place early in the 1800s, but by 1813 it was described as "forty years in the building, but no floors yet". Sir Walter Scott saw it and called it a 'splendid pile of gothic architecture'. It seems to have been abandoned almost immediately and today is an overgrown, but still dramatic ruin.
The Castle stands on public land.
