RYDE CASTLE

Isle of Wight

Ryde Castle, Isle of Wight

The owners of Ryde Castle, which today operates as an hotel, claim it as a Henry VIII fort. It's position fits in with this idea - but if it is true, and there is little documentary evidence to support the fact, then there is certainly nothing remaining of Henry's work at all.  Ryde Castle as it stands today is quite clearly a "Gothick" mansion of the mid-19th century, and, although a handsome building in itself, has no more claim to be a true Castle than the likes of Eastnor or Chiddingstone.
