EASTNOR CASTLE

Herefordshire

Although very obviously not a genuine Castle, Eastnor Castle should never be ignored by Castle enthusiasts if nothing else for its grand scale and wonderful position.

The Castle was built around 1812 for Earl Somers, and its size cannot fail to take the breath away, as well as its exaggerated "Castle" features - the extravagant corner towers which admittedly are a little reminiscent of some of the genuine medieval ones at Warwick Castle.

There is a tendency amongst so-called Castle Experts to ignore buildings such as Eastnor simply because they are not medieval fortifications.  We consider this an extremely short-sighted view as there is no doubt that buildings of this kind can be both fascinating and every bit as worth visiting as "real" Castles.

Eastnor is open during the summer months and stands in lovely grounds in one of England's most beautiful and forgotten corners.
