The great maritime county of Hampshire has many superb Castles, particularly along the south coast guarding the important Solent waterway, the entrance to the harbours of Portsmouth and Southampton. Portchester is perhaps the crowning glory of the county's Castles.

The centre of the county is cut through by the South Downs, whilst the North Downs sweep in from Surrey. Most of the settlement is along the south coast; Portsmouth, Southampton and the towns that surround them with the county town of Winchester in the centre and Basingstoke the largest settlement in the north.

In the west of the county is the "New" Forest, one of England's two newest National Parks (along with the South Downs) and famed for its wild ponies.

The Isle of Wight is traditionally part of Hampshire, but for our purposes we have added it as a separate entity.
