CALSHOT CASTLE

Hampshire

Calshot Castle, Hampshire

It is Calshot's position that makes it remarkable, rather than the Castle itself.  It stands out at the end of a shingle spit at the end of Southampton Water and provides some superb views up the Water towards Southampton and across the Solent to the Isle of Wight.

The Castle was one of the earliest of Henry VIII's forts and its simple design reflects this fact. Little or nothing of note has ever occured here, save perhaps for the removal of the original roof when a gun was mounted on it.  Probably the best views of the Castle can be had from the Southampton-Cowes ferry.

Calshot was garrisoned until the 1960s and is today owned by English Heritage and open during the summer months.
