YIELDEN CASTLE

Bedfordshire

Yielden Castle, Bedfordshire

Yielden is one of Bedfordshire's beautifully preserved motte and baileys, with all those characteristics of the typical Castle of it's type, pudding shaped motte, kidney shaped bailey, although one side has no defensive works as the ground slopes down to the River Til.

The Castle was built by the De Trailly family and is first mentioned in 1174.  It was a ruin by 1361.  The Castle was rebuilt in stone, as excavations have found some foundations, but no stonework is now visible above ground.

The Castle stands in the centre of the village on common land.
