TOTTERNHOE CASTLE

Totternhoe Castle, Bedfordshire

The very large motte with a double bailey is dominated by its position on one of the highest points at this end of the Chiltern Hills, affording excellent views across southern Bedfordshire.

 Its history is unclear, although excavations show an early origin. It could have been thrown up in the Anarchy.

 The Castle stands on high ground not far from the A5 and is accessible to all who feel inclined to scramble up the muddy steep slope. In very recent years the public land on which the Castle stands has been purchased by the National Trust who have put in place a car park much of the way up the hill.
