TOTTERNHOE CASTLE

Bedfordshire

Totternhoe Castle, Bedfordshire

Probably more interesting that the Castle itself, a fairly standard motte, is its position on one of the highest points at this end of the Chiltern Hills, affording excellent views across southern Bedfordshire.

It's history is unclear, although excavations show a quite early origin.  It could have been thrown up in the Anarchy.

The Castle stands on high ground near the M1 motorway which is accessible to all who feel inclined to scramble up the muddy steep slope.
