NEWTON ST. LOE CASTLE

Somerset

Newton St. Loe Castle, Somerset

Newton St. Loe Castle stands in the beautiful grounds of Bath Spa University's Campus. There are two bits of the Castle, but no one is certain if they were ever joined together.

The eldest part is the tower house (in the background of this picture) which was constructed - as far as anyone can tell - by the St. Loe family in the mid-14th Century. The Gatehouse was added around a century later by Sir Walter Hungerford who died in 1449. The Gatehouse seems in an odd position being higher up the hill than the tower and it is of fairly light construction.

A magnificent Tudor house was built beyond the Gatehouse which was incorporated into its garden walls.

Permission should be sought before a visit, but the staff are welcoming and it is worth making the effort.
