SHAWELL CASTLE

Leicestershire

Shawell Castle, Leicestershire

This rather handsome dome shaped motte has almost no recorded history, odd in an area so steeped in medieval bloodshed.  The Wars of the Roses raged around the Castle, but it may have already been gone by then.

It could be one of the many Castles of the Anarchy, in which case it was almost certainly abandoned by the beginning of the 13th century.  The Castle is on public land.
