NUNNEY CASTLE

Nunney Castle, Somerset

This handsome little Castle is almost unique in its layout (in England anyway).  The design was brought back from France by Hundred Years War veteran Sir John de la Mare who received his licence to crenellate in 1373.  The Castle is a particularly odd shape, having large circular corner towers and almost negligable sections of wall between.

This didn't stop a brief but violent siege in 1645 when after a two-day battering the Castle fell to the Roundheads.  The wall which they so badly damaged collapsed in 1910.

Nunney has often been described as a 'toy castle' and its small size with its petite moat and exaggerated lines could justify such a description.  It is, however, a very satisfying building and very pleasing on the eye - as is the village of Nunney itself.

The Castle is owned by English Heritage and is open (and free) at any reasonable time.
