MACKWORTH CASTLE
Derbyshire

This Castle was built by the Mackworth family who were living here by 1254 and didn't move out until 1655.
The Castle which once stood here was supposedly a quadrangular affair which was destroyed - it is said - in the Civil War, although no evidence survives to clarify this. The 'gatehouse' which still stands is a Tudor construction and not particularly defensive, despite its appearance.
The building is actually private, but is easily seen as it stands right next to the road.
