HORNBY CASTLE

Particularly handsome when viewed from the bridge over the little River Wenning, this is a mostly rebuilt structure from 1849-52 centred around a tower house of a much earlier date.

The motte and bailey near here at Castle Stede was abandoned in the 13th century by the Longuevillers.  They built a fairly large Castle here, when the grounds were being cleared in 1848 remains were found of a curtain wall and two towers which were, unfortunately, demolished.

The tower dates from the 1300s when it was constructed by Nevilles, the top half was rebuilt around 1500 by Sir Edward Stanley who was a distinguished soldier at Flodden.  This tower now forms the centre of the 19th century building.

The Castle is private, but the view from the bridge is one of the best anyhow as closer approach belies its medieval look.
