CASTLE STEDE

Castle Stede, Lancashire

This very large and handsome ringwork Castle dating to the early 1100s was the one abandoned by the Longuevillers family for Hornby Castle, built nearby in the 13th Century.

A 200 year occupation seems a long time for a wooden Castle, so Castle Stede was almost certainly rebuilt in stone, although no trace remains of that today.

The earthwork, which is quite well preserved and very large, is on public land.
