EARL SHILTON CASTLE

Leicestershire

Earl Shilton Castle, Leicestershire

This low motte in the village of the same name was built initially by Robert, Earl of Leicester around 1140.  Although little is clear of its history, it was certainly rebuilt in stone as it remained occupied until the 17th century when it was demolished.

Today a cute "mock up" of a gatehouse adds to the picturesque little public garden which the Castle has become.
