CAVERSWALL CASTLE

Caverswall Castle, Staffordshire

A large Castle was built here around 1275 by William de Caverswall, the Sheriff of Staffordshire. It was a quadrangular Castle on high ground above a deep moat, which is flooded on one side to make an ornamental pond.  The Castle was one of the earliest to use octagonal towers instead of round or square ones.  A similar Castle stood at Eccleshall, but only a few remain are left now.

It is quite hard to see the original parts of the Castle today as it was very heavily altered by Matthew Craddock after he purchased the estate in 1615.  The building we see today is mostly Jacobean, and is very handsome, although its dark stone gives it a grim appearance.

The Castle is a private house, but appointments can be made to view the exterior.
