CAINHOE CASTLE
Bedfordshire
Cainhoe Castle, near the village of Clophill, has no less than three baileys, and although no record of stonework has been found it was occupied until the Black Death which wiped out both the Castle's population and that of the village next door.
There is little recorded history for this Castle, although at the time of the Domesday Book the land was owned by Nigel d'Albini who was most likely responsible for the initial construction.
The Castle is freely accessible from a footpath.
