BRATTON CASTLE

Wiltshire

Bratton is more famous for its wonderful White House, probably the most visible and most familiar of all of Wiltshire's many White Horses.  But as is often the case with White Horse Hills there is also an Iron Age Hill Fort crowning the top of the hill (see also Uffington Castle, Berkshire).

The Hill Fort is basically square and encloses 10 hectares inside its double ditch.  The ditch is single on the eastern side which is better protected by the natural escarpment. A small entrance area is also cut into the western side. A long barrow stands in the centre of the Hill Fort.

Although little of note seems to have occurred here, save for the cutting of the White Horse (now believed to pre-date the 1778 re-cut by about 2000 years!), Bratton is a wonderful place for a summer picnic with views to the Welsh hills northwards.
