UFFINGTON CASTLE

Berkshire

Uffington Castle, Berkshire

There is no doubt that Uffington with its famous White Horse is one of the most significant ancient sites in Britain (second perhaps only to the Stonehenge-Avebury set).  Although the Horse is intriguing it is hard to see from the hill itself.  The Iron Age Hill Fort known as Uffington Castle however cannot fail to impress with its sheer scale.  Although the design is simple by Hill Fort standards, it encloses 3.2 hectares of land and the views are simply breathtaking.

Uffington has an atmosphere very much its own which sets it apart from all the other Hill Forts - a perfect place for a summer picnic.

The Castle and White Horse are on public land, although the Horse has been fenced off to protect it from damage.
