WILTON CASTLE

North Riding of Yorkshire

Wilton Castle, North Riding of Yorkshire

Middlesborough, with the best will in the World, is not the most attractive town in Britain. It is even less attractive when you take in the vast chemical works which stand to the east.  Oddly enough facing this industrial monstrosity belching pollution out into the Cleveland air is Wilton Castle.

A medieval Castle apparently stood here, but absolutely no trace of this remains today.  The structure baring the name is Robert Smirke's castellated mansion dating to around 1810.  It is hardly the most attractive of gothick mansions, but is quite sizable and impressive for that reason. A broken folly stands on the hill behind it.  The interiors have long since been gutted and the Castle is part of ICI's offices, so only the exterior is freely visible.
