WHORLTON CASTLE

North Riding of Yorkshire

Whorlton Castle, North Riding of Yorkshire

The main portion of the Castle remaining is the Gatehouse (pictured above).  The ditch surrounding the Castle dates from an early Norman Castle built by the Meynell family in Norman days.  The Gatehouse is most likely the work of Philip, Lord Darcy who died in 1419.  Oddly the Gatehouse is actually built in the ditch, giving it a slightly dwarfish aspect.

The Castle seems to have no remarkable history at all, and sticks in our minds mostly for the party of school children gathered like a huddle of red ducklings around their teacher in atrocious weather - which made a memorable photograph (above).

The Castle is freely accessible at all times.
