WESTENHANGER CASTLE
Kent
Westenhanger Castle dates back to the invasion scare of Edward III's reign - a period which gave us Castles such as Bodiam and Scotney. In comparison Westenhanger is modest, but it is nevertheless a pleasing place to visit. The licence to crenellate came in 1344 being granted to one John de Kiriel. The Castle never saw any action, but passed through a succession of owners and was gradually removed bit by bit.
The north-west tower has associations with Rosamund Clifford - one of Henry II's mistresses, known as "Fair Rosamund" and "The Maid of Kent". She almost certainly stayed at Westenhanger, but equally certainly not in this tower.
The Georgian House which was built into the walls of the north-east corner is today a luxury hotel making Westenhanger a very romantic destination indeed.
