WAYTEMORE CASTLE

Hertfordshire

Waytemore Castle, Hertfordshire

Waytemore Castle, although only possessing a little stonework today, was an important Castle throughout the medieval period.  The motte was constructed on the orders of William I, and as the Castle settled into a more peaceful role it became one of the homes of the Bishops of London.

The Castle was put to slightly less pleasant use later in its history as the notorious jail for the Nonconformists and it was pulled down after the Civil War, leaving only earthworks, the large motte and the foundations of a large square tower, most probably a keep.

The Castle stands in a public park in the centre of Bishops' Stortford.
