WALWORTH CASTLE

County Durham

Walworth Castle, County Durham

Generally ignored by Castle books because it isn't a "real" Castle, this wonderful building dates back to the late 16th century when it was built by Thomas Jennison, Auditor of Ireland. Construction was continued by his widow, who entertained James I here in 1603.  Although dismissed as "not a real Castle" it does have gunloops in the south west tower, which may date back as far as 1530.

The Castle was heavily rebuilt around 1835, but it retains the "courtyard" style of the original and today it operates as an hotel.
