WADENHOE CASTLE

Northamptonshire

Wadenhoe Castle, Northamptonshire

The huge elaborate earthworks which stand by the church in Wadenhoe have a commanding view over the Nene as it snakes across the centre of Northampton far below.

As is so often the case the history of the Castle is shrouded in mystery, although there is a limestone fortification which may have been built before the Conquest and the site reused; although some history books describe the site as "disused quarries".

Whichever is the case the earthworks are impressive and give superb views over the Nene.
