TURTON TOWER

Lancashire

Turton Tower, Lancashire

This very handsome building dates back to the 1400s, when the Orrell family built the Pele Tower (pictured left) - a very southerly example of such a structure.  This was enlarged in the 1590s by William Orrell who also added the rather unfortified windows.  A house was then added to the side of the Tower (pictured right) which is basically Tudor, although the exterior was greatly altered in Victorian times.

Little history seems to have occurred here which has allowed this very attractive building to pass through history in such wonderful condition.

Turton Tower is open to the public during the summer months.
