TOTNES CASTLE

Devon

Totnes Castle, Devon

Totnes Castle was built originally by Judhael de Totnes soon after the Conquest.  He lost the land to the Crown after he rebelled against William Rufus.  By this time the Castle was built much as we see it today, although it was repaired extensively by the Zouche family around 1326.  The Zouche family were based in the Midlands (see Ashby-de-la-Zouch Castle, Leicestershire) and rarely visited Totnes.  Nevertheless it was kept in good condition until Tudor times.

No action ever seems to have occured here and Totnes remains today one of the best preserved of all Norman shell keeps.

It is owned by English Heritage and is open during the summer months.
