TORKSEY CASTLE

Lincolnshire

Torksey Castle, Lincolnshire

This ruined Tudor house stands overlooking the River Trent to the north west of Lincoln.

Although not a real defensive Castle, it has many of the standard Castle features (a large gateway, corner towers and so forth).  It was built sometime after 1559 by Sir Robert Jermyn.

What remains today is the west front and part of the kitchen range, the original having been quadrangular like many late Tudor houses.

The Castle itself is private, but all the land around it is public.  The River Trent at this point is huge and slow flowing and looks far more like England's third longest river than the trickle which passes through Nottingham.
