SULGRAVE CASTLE

Northamptonshire

Sulgrave Castle, Northamptonshire

The village of Sulgrave is better known today for Sulgrave Hall, the ancestral home of George Washington, first President of the United States of America.

The Castle, a superb example of a ringwork, dates back to soon after the Conquest.  Excavations in the 1970s revealed the remains of a quite large wooden hall underneath one phase of the ringwork, implying that it was built in two stages.  Whichever is the case it seems to have been abandoned as early as 1125.  The 'entrance' in the ringwork was added in the 18th century.

The Castle stands on public ground next to the church.
