SUDELEY CASTLE

Gloucestershire

Sudeley Castle, Gloucestershire

There was a Castle at Sudeley during the Anarchy, but the present building is an amalgam of medieval Castle and Elizabethan manor house.  The medieval portion was built by Sir Ralph Boteler sometime shortly before 1458 when he was pardoned for crenellating Sudeley without a licence.  He sold the Castle, under duress, to Edward IV who granted it to Richard, Duke of Gloucester (later to become Richard III) who did a lot of work to strengthen the Castle.  The Castle later passed to Thomas Seymour, and his wife Katherine Parr (who survived Henry VIII as his sixth wife) lived here.

The Castle was rebuilt in part in the 1570s by Lord Chandos as a mansion, rather than a Castle. It was this Castle that faced a siege in 1644 by the Roundheads, after which the Castle was slighted.

Sudeley Castle was the 1000th Castle which Andrew and Roy visited.

It is open to the public during the Summer months.
