STANSTED MOUNTFICHET CASTLE

Stansted Mountfichet Castle, Essex

Stansted Mountfichet Castle, often called just Mountfichet Castle, stands as it's name suggests near to London Stansted Airport - indeed the Airport takes its name from the little village.

The Castle itself, built by the Mountfichet family soon after the Conquest, has an unremarkable and short history.  It was rebuilt in stone at some stage (one chunk of masonry still survives) but was destroyed when Richard de Mountfichet rebelled against King John in 1212.

What is remarkable about Stansted Mountfichet Castle is that in the 1980s it was rebuilt in timber as a reflection of just what a timber motte and bailey Castle would have been like. Although a certain amount of guess work was involved what we have today is a remarkably atmospheric - and more importantly quite unique - attempt at a recreation of a timber Castle.

For any Castle enthusiast it is an absolute must.

The Castle is open to the public during the summer months and occasionally in the winter.
