SLINGSBY CASTLE
North Riding of Yorkshire
A Castle stood on the slightly raised ground here from around 1338 when Ralph de Hastings received a licence to crenellate. The slight 'moat' which surrounds the present building may date from this period.
In the 17th century Sir Charles Cavendish began to build a Jacobean mansion where the Hastings Castle once stood which took the name "Castle". For reasons unknown this later building was never finished and became a ruin at a very early stage.
What remains today is mostly the corner towers with a large chunk of one side wall. It is one of the most romantically ivy-clad ruins in the country, but is in desparate need of attention to stop further decay.
Although the Castle is on private land, it would appear the owners have resigned themselves to allowing public access as there was absolutely no sign of any fences or signs announcing the fact.
