SIZERGH CASTLE

Westmorland

Sizergh Castle, Westmorland

The Strickland family have lived at Sizergh since 1239, but the oldest part of the Castle is a pele tower built by Sir Thomas de Strickland in the 1340s.  Sir Thomas was a great soldier and was often absent on campaigns in France and Ireland.  It is unclear whether the tower was ever attacked by the Scots, but it always seems to have had a residential hall attached.

This hall was rebuilt in Tudor times by Walter Strickland, and was given a rather clumsy Georgian frontage later still.  The two side buildings are Elizabethan and in more or less their original condition.

The Castle is owned by the National Trust, and thus more attention is paid these days to the gardens rather than the somewhat neglected building.
