REIGATE CASTLE

Surrey

Reigate Castle, Surrey

This really very large Castle was constructed by William de Warenne.  The earthworks cover quite a large area and are very deep and steep.  Stonework was certainly added, although what form it took is a little uncertain.

The Castle was captured in 1264 by Simon de Montfort, and during the Civil War held out against a Parliamentarian siege (in 1648).  This second siege lasted only one day, after which the Royalists were chased to Kingston where they were slaughtered.

The "Gatehouse" in the photo above is a folly constructed around 1777 and is said to be constructed from stonework taken from the Castle ruins.

The site of the Castle is now a public park.
