PULVERBATCH CASTLE

Shropshire

Pulverbatch Castle, Shropshire

This very handsome and well positioned Motte and Bailey stands near the village of Castle Pulverbatch.  The Castle may have been built by 1086 by Roger Venator, but the first definite mention is from 1153 when the Castle was held by the appropriately named Henry de Castello who had acquired it by marriage to Emma de Pulverbatch.

Early the next century the Castle passed to the Kilpeck family and then to Philip Marmion, at whose death in 1291 the Castle is referred to as a "capital messuage".  The Castle remained occupied until well into the 14th century, and a chapel is mentioned in 1427, so presumably something still remained then.

The Castle stands today on public land and offers some nice views of the flatter central plain of Shropshire.
