OLD OSWESTRY
Shropshire
This large and impressive Iron Age Hill Fort stands outside the modern town of Oswestry and is probably quite justified in its name, as this was almost certainly the site of the first settlement hereabouts.
The earthworks are very well preserved and quite extensive and complicated. Old Oswestry has, unusually, two entrances. As is usually the case, little concrete history is available for Old Oswestry, although it seems to have been deserted soon after the Romans arrived in Shropshire and unlike some Hill Forts there is no sign of a re-settlement.
The town of Oswestry has a motte Castle which was once the site of quite a large stone construction which existed up until the mid-1700s, but has now vanished.
