NEWNHAM-ON-SEVERN CASTLE

Gloucestershire

Newnham-on-Severn Castle, Gloucestershire

Surprisingly few Castles guard the entrance to the River Severn, possibly because it is so wide and difficult a river that Castles weren't necessary.  Newnham-on-Severn is a pleasant, small village on the north bank of the River to the south of the glorious Royal Forest of Dean.

Newnham's history is rather cloudy and obscure, but it is an excellent example of a "platform motte" where the motte is not pudding bowl-shaped, but rather a larger, flat topped affair around which would have been an outer wall with a small tower usually in one corner.

The Castle stands near the church and offers some very good views of the River.
