MULGRAVE CASTLE
North Riding of Yorkshire
Pre-dated by a nearby motte, Mulgrave Castle was built by Peter de Maulay some time shortly after 1214 when he acquired the property by marriage. De Maulay was a great favourite with King John as he took part in the murder of Prince Arthur, the King's nephew and a more popular candidate for the Throne than John himself.
It is quite hard to discern all the details of the Castle as it has been very badly damaged over time, but the buttressed towers of De Maulay's original can still be made out. A later Peter de Maulay added a tower house about a century later in which a large Elizabethan window has been placed (see above), so that Castle was certainly still occupied then.
It seems likely that it was in use until the siege in the Civil War which resulted in a rather severe slighting. Since then the Castle has just been allowed to fall to ruin and even today is overgrown and neglected.
The site is accessible in Mulgrave Woods, but be warned - it's quite a trek and rather hard to find!
