MOW COP CASTLE

Cheshire

Mow Cop Castle, Cheshire

The village of Mow Cop quite literally straddles the border between Cheshire and Staffordshire, and so Mow Cop Castle often gets put into Staffordshire sections by mistake, it is in fact (just) on the Cheshire side.

Mow Cop has to be a good contender for "best folly Castle", standing as it does some 1100 feet above sea level on the only hill for miles in any direction, it is visible for miles and miles around (from as far away as the railway line north of Crewe for instance, something like 30 miles west).

It was built as an "eyecatcher" for the home of Randle Wilbraham who lived in the valley below in 1750. Marvellous views across the Cheshire plain can be had from here...on a good day you can see Liverpool!

The Castle stands on public ground and is accessible at all times.
