The Mouse Upon The Stair

It was a day when without a care
I encounter a mouse upon the stair
I said, "Why mouse what brings you hither?"
He struck up a tune upon his zither
As hypnotic an air as you'd ever heard
Even if a musical mouse might seem absurd
"Oh little mouse, what a wondrous tune"
Said I, though I admit I felt a buffoon
The mouse then gave a little bow
Packed his zither away and mopped his brow
Just when I had begun to think him cute
He ran off up the stairs after a two-finger salute
And to this day I've never again seen him there
The little musical mouse upon the stair.
