MORETON CORBET CASTLE
Shropshire
Something of an oddity amongst Shropshire's ruins, Moreton Corbet Castle dates back to around 1200, but was greatly altered over the centuries, and much of the ruin dates from the late 16th century.
Amongst the ruins are one side of the keep from the original stone Castle built in the 13th century. Nearby stands the much-altered remains of a gatehouse from the following century, which was heightened and made more residential around 1579.
The Castle was founded by the Toret family, and until 1515 the Castle was known as Moreton Toret. The Castle passed to the Corbets in 1239. It was rebuilt by Sir Andrew Corbet and his son Robert who died in 1583 leaving the work not quite finished.
However, even in its unfinished state the Castle was strong enough to withstand an attack in 1644, although it was captured and subsequently turned into the ruin we see today.
The Castle is owned by English Heritage and is open and freely accessible at all daylight times.
