The central county of the Lothians, Midlothian is dominated by the great City of Edinburgh, capital of Scotland which sits in the centre of its coastline. Inland the county is mildly hilly with a couple of range of higher hills and largely rural. There are a string of towns along the Firth of Forth from Musselburgh through Portobello, Leith and Cramond. Away from Edinburgh the major settlements are Roslin, Dalkeith and Bonnyrigg.

It has a scattering of castles, best amongst them are Craigmillar and, of course, the massive bulk of Edinburgh Castle itself - one of the most famous buildings in the world.
