MISERDEN CASTLE

Miserden Castle, Gloucestershire

This large motte and bailey Castle dates back to around 1100 when it was built by Robert Musard.  In 1146 he was ambushed by King Stephen and forced to surrender the Castle on pain of death.

The Castle survived into Henry II's reign, but was abandoned by 1289.  The site is today heavily overgrown, but still impressive in its size.

The Castle is in Miserden Park, which is open to the public during the Summer months.
