MERE CASTLE

Wiltshire

Mere Castle, Wiltshire

Mere Castle owes its dominating position over the attractive little town to the fact that it began life as a small Iron Age Hill Fort.  The motte and baileys are impressively large, and it must surely have been a wonderful Castle when it still possessed the stonework that excavation has revealed.

The Castle was built by Richard of Cornwall around 1253 and had a keep, a curtain wall and at least 6 towers, two of which were round.

It's later history is very obscure and the chances are it didn't survive for very long, probably donating its stonework to the town that grew up below it.

The earthworks are accessible at all times from a public footpath.
