MOUNT BATTEN CASTLE

Devon

Mount Batten Castle, Devon

This odd, squat little tower stands on the opposite side of Plymouth Sound to the City of Plymouth itself and was little more than a gun post.  It's history is uncertain, although it may date to Tudor times.

It derives its name from Mount Batten Point, upon which it stands, oddly out of place amongst factories and ugly industrial wasteland.  If Plymouth Sound hadn't been made so ugly by industry Mount Batten Castle would present a wonderful view of the area...alas the view has been tainted in most directions.
