MARMION TOWER

North Riding of Yorkshire

Marmion Tower, North Riding of Yorkshire

Marmion Tower is all that remains of "Tanfield Castle"; it is in fact the Gatehouse from a Castle built in the early 15th century by Sir Henry Fitzhugh (died 1424).  The Marmions did have a Castle here previously, from which the Tower takes it's name - albeit incorrectly.

The Gatehouse is built so close to the Church you can almost feel as if you could climb from one to the other!  The tiny projection from the side of the Tower (pictured) is the garderobe (toilet) which emptied straight into the River below.

The Gatehouse, long since dubbed "Marmion Tower", is owned by English Heritage and accessible during daylight hours in the summer.
