LUDGERSHALL CASTLE

Ludgershall Castle, Wiltshire

This small ruined Castle stands isolated from all the rest of Wiltshire's medieval Castles near the Hampshire border.

The date of its construction is uncertain, but it is first recorded in 1141 when Queen Matilda stayed here after being driven from Winchester.  The tower which remains is a wall tower, rather than the keep which exists only as foundations nearby.  It may have been built during the Anarchy and was one of those rare adulterine Castles that Henry II didn't have destroyed.

Henry III took possession in 1225 and often used the Castle as a base for hunting expeditions. After Henry's death the Castle fell into decline and nothing else appears to have occurred here.

The Castle is owned by English Heritage and is freely accessible during daylight hours.
