Longthorpe Tower, Northamptonshire

Longthorpe Tower is the only Castle of any great note in the ancient Soke of Peterborough, once a county in its own right and subsequently absorbed into Northamptonshire and today part of Cambridgeshire.

The Tower is attached to a 13th century building.  Robert de Thorpe added the Tower around 1300 as a defensive refuge.  The building was probably very important and much larger than it is today.  Inside the solar are the remarkable early 14th century wall paintings which were discovered under whitewash in the 1940s and are today what Longthorpe Tower is most renowned for.

The Tower is owned by English Heritage and is open during the summer months.
