LILBOURNE CASTLES

Northamptonshire

Lilbourne Castle, Northamptonshire

There are two Castles at Lilbourne, one a motte with a bailey by the church; the other, just a motte, on the hill overlooking the village and the flatlands of Warwickshire beyond.

One of the two was built here by King Stephen, although which is unclear and nothing further is known about either site.  The motte and bailey is large and impressively well preserved, the motte is also well preserved but more noticeable for its long views.

Both are on public land.
